1987 EATERY at HERTEX

Maynard Street, Cape Town

This is  a shoutout to 1987 Eatery and actually also Lazari further up the same street, as our two favourite neighbourhood joints for, mostly, brunch and the odd light lunch. We haven’t missed going out to dinner over the past 18 months as much as we missed going out to breakfast or brunch and these two establishments tick so many boxes, from ambience to consistent quality of food and value for money.

1987 Eatery, particularly, is an excellent venue if one is concerned about social distancing in closed spaces,  and it’s the more elegant and luxurious of the two, given that it’s situated in a business dedicated to high end interior decoration, but it’s also quite cosy and almost homey, with a menu that is simple and food and coffee that has always been of the highest standard.

Today I met the younger goddaughter’s significant other, who celebrates his birthday, for a light lunch and to interrogate him closely on his plans for his career and with her. It wasn’t that hot and he wasn’t eating a chilli heavy dish but he was sweating a lot by the end of it, and glassy-eyed.

We sat outside in the courtyard which has been radically upscaled over the past few years until it’s become, for me, one of the best spots for semi-outdoors dining in Cape Town, beautifully appointed and sheltered from the worst of the elements. I can believe I’m sitting in some tropical paradise, sans the muggy heat.

He had the superb eggs Benedict with bacon (of which  the wife’s extraordinarily fond) (R78)

and I chose the very tasty roasted butternut and lentil wrap, which comes with a lovely fresh little salad (R68.)

We finished with delectable shortbread and meringue biscuits. He drank a cup of the excellent coffee and I drank craft ginger beer.  All in all, a satisfactory meal.
