SALT & COPPER

R102, Hartenbos

Salt & Copper could be a warehouse conversion with a polished cement floor and a high, vaulted ceiling, repurposed into a restaurant by setting out a bunch of tables inside, and more outside, but it’s much more user friendly than a warehouse with  a clean, elegant and modern décor style. I guess it’ll be a good reception venue for big weddings where the guests want to dance ‘till the wee hours.

Cosy and intimate it’s not.

The breakfast menu is not extensive, but covers the basics with a granola bowl, a vegan bowl, a light  fry up, a full fry up, the avo twist, eggs Benedict, flapjacks and a deconstructed breakfast enchilada.

The wife dotes on eggs Benedict (R90)

and for me it was a duel between the vegan bowl and the deconstructed enchilada (R110.)  The latter won.

I must commend the friendly, fast and efficient service. We received what we ordered and the drinks and food came to the table lickety split.

The eggs Benedict dish, with two perfectly poached eggs, was, to the wife’s mind, not a classic Benedict, as eggs were served on rösti and the dish included onion and mushroom, along with spinach and bacon, and the thick, white sauce was closer to a cheese sauce than the Hollandaise one expects. The dish was  very tasty, nonetheless, but at the end the wet elements on the rösti caused them to disintegrate and she was left with saucy remnants on her plate that cried out for a slice of bread with which to soak them.

My enchilada consisted of scrambled eggs and bacon, chilli and salsa, slathered with melted cheese, on top of crisp tortilla  triangles, with guacamole (possibly just smashed avo) and cottage cheese on the side. It made me think of nachos with egg on top. I thoroughly enjoyed the dish, especially the textural contrast between the crisp tortilla and the unctuous topping, and the perky chilli heat.

The bill, including three coffees, a pot of splendid Earl Grey tea and two substantial slices of  yummy, moist, carrot cake, came to R393,00 before tip.
