Zeus Greek Tero Bar

ZEUS GREEK YERO BAR

Long Street, Cape Town

I was ambling along a decidedly sad looking Long Street where too many businesses have permanently closed, idly considering the proposition of lunch, when I passed by this hole-in-the-wall joint, essentially a long service counter with only two tall, metal tables, next to the entrance to Adult World.

Should’ve more aptly been called Aphrodite, eh?

The menu is prettily pictured against the wall behind the counter and the images are entirely enticing even if one is always suspicious that the real life offering would not quite match the exquisite image. The variety of choice (yero, shearma, souvlaki, etc) also seems improbable given the small size of the working space and the single front of house, cook and bottle washer person on duty. However, the pictures are so pretty one is entranced.

Yero (or giro) is, as far as I understand, a popular Greek street food, and I decided to indulge in a lamb version thereof.

For R100 (including a 500ml bottle of still water) i received lamb, salad and fries drizzled in a garlic rich chilli sauce, all neatly encased in a large wrap.

Look, I’ll grant you, it’s not in the same ball park as fine dining, but the yero hit the spot and made me happy. The meat was succulent and combined well with the greens and additional carbs, and the sauce was rather perky.

Every now and then “street food” lives up to the contemporaneous hype. Cheap and incredibly cheerful. Yay!
