The RAW deal at Scheckters

Scheckters RAW

at the Wellness Warehouse

Lifestyle Centre, Kloof Street, Cape Town

This was my first Sheckters experience, in the space where the  Wellness Warehouse café used to be.

To put it plainly and simply, it’s a cafeteria and no more, with abundant natural light from the doors / windows opening onto a balcony overlooking Kloof Street and an interior that celebrates Spartan starkness,  with hard, wooden bench banquette seating on the outskirts of the space, some free-standing tables and a large, central communal table with bar stools.  There is no soft, comfy upholstery for the bum to linger on.

If you want to sit outside on the balcony, there are bench tables. Surprisingly, on a cold, windy day like today, some hardy customers actually sat out there.

The breakfast options are limited: pumpkin pie flapjacks,  avocado on toast, the organic oat jar and the huevos rancheros breakfast wrap.

Presumably the organic superfood smoothies and bowls are breakfast fodder too.

I ordered a pumpkin doughnut (R29) with my breakfast, and it arrived with the small amount of espresso (R19) in a glass. The delicious doughnut had a good crumb, was topped with chocolate and didn’t taste much like pumpkin.

My main meal was the huevos rancheros breakfast wrap (don’t know why, especially in a Mexican inspired dish, the wrap isn’t simply called a tortilla) where the “egg” is organic, scrambled tofu, and the other components are  mushrooms, baby spinach, red & yellow peppers, red onion, beans with herbs and spices (no discernible chilli bite) with a tangy mustard dressing on the side. (R89)

The tortilla was thin and soft, and the ingredients were flavourful and tasty but not warm.  It was a light yet filling dish and I was quite happy with it.

The bill came to R108,00 before tip.

Seeing as how I suspected that some kind of “mylk” would be in any coffee I’d order that wasn’t black, I went downstairs to Starbucks (not having been in one since December 2018) for a humongous latté (perhaps a litre?) at R46,00. Pricey Starbucks may be, but the coffee is really excellent. It’s just a serving counter in a small space and one must sit outside at the few small tables they have, which is a wonderful opportunity to watch the often quite exotic passers-by who enter and leave the centre.
