Tashas in leafy Constantia

Tashas

Constantia Village shopping centre, Constantia

The wife and I don’t often venture out to the leafy suburbs off the M3 for a rather late brunch on a weekday but it was my birthday, I’d slept very late and we were looking for a joint that serves an all-day breakfast in a more exotic location than the City Bowl.

Tashas was, to me, surprisingly busy halfway through the lunch hour on a Tuesday,  and a day on which the schools opened for the new term, but fortunately our waiting time for a table was just less than 10 minutes and we got a decent table at the rear of the room, at the banquette seating against the back wall.

As usual, the service was efficient and friendly. We ordered cappuccinos while waiting for a table, and they arrived soon after we were seated, and once we ordered our respective meals, they were served tout suite as well.

The wife had superb, proper eggs Benedict with runny yolks on the poached eggs and a Hollandaise sauce with the lemony tang one yearns for but so often don’t get.

My birthday breakfast special treat is French toast and Tasha’s serve a blinder. The two thick slices of cinnamon sugar dusted brioche look intimidating when the plate arrives but the crumb is so light and delicate that the bread isn’t the gullet choking chunk of carb one fears at first. The brioche just melts in the mouth. It’s served with a maple flavoured syrup and a berry compote, which are delightful too and the good portion additional bacon I ordered was the perfect savoury foil to the otherwise sweet dish.

The shared sweet treat was a slice of deeply satisfying baked cheesecake with a shard of white chocolate, which I left to the wife. The cheesecake was not overly sweet and had exactly the right degree of off-dry texture that is the USP of a good cheesecake for me.

The bill was R470,00, including tip.

Tashas has always served us good food, in good-sized portions, has excellent coffee and faultless service.  That’s what I call value for money.
