Sweetbeet breakfast

SWEETBEET
Gardens Centre, Cape Town
This is only my second breakfast at Sweetbeet. My first one, last year, was unsatisfactory because I misunderstood the offerings. The wife and I’ve had good lunches here a few times since then and I’ve grown fonder of the joint.
As a major plus point, Sweetbeet offers Vida é Caffé coffee, which we prefer to the Bootlegger brand next door.
The breakfast menu is simple, with some health options in bowls, variations on egg and/or avocado dishes and French toast. Nothing too fancy and mostly on the light side.
I chose the crushed avo and egg goodness (R69), which consists of two poached eggs on flattened avocado on toast, with a couple of halved fresh cherry tomatoes.
It’s very similar to the dish I recently ate at Ruby’s Café & Bakery at the Pepper Club Hotel and I must say, if the Ruby’s version is materially more expensive, it’s also that much better.
Sweetbeet’s poached eggs were cooked in some kind of form, possibly in a microwave, something I’d expect from a Wimpy and they were almost hard poached, with only a smidgen of liquid yolk. Where Ruby’s avocado was smooth and creamy, Sweetbeet’s version seemed to be what I’d do at home: avocado flattened with a fork on top of toast.
I guess one can’t complain too much. It was okay, it filled the belly and it’s cheap. Vida coffee is always good.
The bill came to R135, inclusive of food and two small cappuccinos.
