Yumcious: good but unremarkable

YUMCIOUS

Cape Quarter, Somerset Road, Cape Town

I’ve been here before but the wife hasn’t and it seemed a fair alternative to Bootlegger next-door, for a quick breakfast after some business in the area.

We were twice alerted to the harvest table inside but, at over R300,00 per kg (if memory serves), this option seemed a tad splurgy for a midweek brekky and stuck to the a la carte menu, which tries hard to be interesting and intriguing with the quirky monickered dishes though, from experience, they’re often not as utterly captivating as the name or the description might suggest and “Going Greek” (my choice) is a good example.

It’s two poached eggs on wilted spinach, sweet peppers, spring onion and Feta cheese and mushrooms with a yoghurt dressing on the side. (R94)

It was alright.  I wanted a light breakfast and I got one. The eggs were poached to order and the dish was well seasoned and had some flavour but it was rinky-dink and felt like a rip off compared to the far superior (quantity and quality) R80,00 vegan breakfast at SUSA restaurant I had a day or two later.

The wife had an omelette with mushroom, cheese and bacon (R89 base price) to which she added tomato for R15, bring the total cost to R104.   It was serviceable and she was satisfied with it. (Didn’t think of taking a pic, though.)

The total bill, with two coffees and tip, came to R290,00.

If you develop a sudden peckishness in the vicinity of the Cape Quarter, and don’t fancy any of the entry level  eateries at the Somerset Road entrance, Yumcious is a tolerable alternative to Bootlegger unless, of course, you have a MacBook  and want to use it. The food at Yumcious is of a good, unspectacular  standard, the service is friendly and efficient and the coffee is good.
