No redemption at Cake Canteen

CAKE CANTEEN #2
Upper Maynard Street, Lower Vredehoek, Cape Town
We returned to Cake Canteen to see if there had been any changes for the better since our last somewhat disappointing visit and were disappointed again. Perhaps we just don’t want to accept the business model, but when the only savoury option remains a pre-packaged ham and cheese croissant, it really isn’t a destination for even just a light meal.
The croissant was substantial and seemed fresh(ish) and good in its own right but I expected far more ham and cheese in it than I got.
The wife’s sweet treats were a mini chocolate cupcake and a filled macaroon, which were sweet and okay. I chose the lemon poppy seed cake, which was quite substantial and had a good crumb but delivered very little poppy seediness and the lemon flavour in the icing was overwhelmed by the sugar content.
The coffee was okay but the service was lackadaisical and inattentive to say the least. We were the only customers in the place and perhaps the staff were petrified to have to serve anybody as they might not have much experience of it.
Okay, so we’ve given Cake Canteen a second chance and it was the last chance. The space is beautiful but the offering is severely lacking. A real missed opportunity.
