Braai Day is Butter day

BUTTER

70 Loop Street, Cape Town

We were on our way to Butter (Sea Point) when we passed a palpably open and busy Butter (Cape Town), reconsidered the journey to the Atlantic Seaboard, circled back and found an excellent parking space close to the CBD outlet.

When I was checking out brunch spots for today, it hadn’t crossed my mind that Butter (CBD) could be open on a public holiday.  But there we were. The establishment was quite busy, with a significant turnover of a hip, young crowd and tourists.

The interior is still as spartan as I recall it from my previous visit, a good few years ago, with wooden tables and bent-back chairs and almost no pop of colour in the decoration. These days there’s also a covered deck space outside.

The all-day breakfast menu has plenty to entice one. My choice was the hash brown stack (R130) with two poached eggs, avocado, bacon, Feta, Peppadew and rocket

while the wife chose the Butter Benedict with buttermilk fried chicken (R140).

She drank two flat whites and I had an espresso and a cappuccino. For reasons unknown, it seems that my cappuccino was made with oat milk, a substance I loathe conceptually and hadn’t requested, and we were billed R10 extra for it. I must admit that I hadn’t noticed the difference except that the coffee tasted a tad stronger than I like. The wife thought the coffee was excellent but then, she had milk in hers.

On the wife’s dish, the eggs were poached to order,  the herb crust on the chicken was lightly crisp, the meat was succulent and flavourful and the Hollandaise was plentiful and perfect.

My eggs were poached to order too, the hash browns were crisp and well-seasoned and the amounts of avocado and bacon were generous.

We were well impressed with our meals.

We ended with a giant scone, served with butter, cream and jam, which wasn’t quite on point. We thought the scone had been heated up in a microwave oven, hence the soft crust instead of the expected crispness, but the crumb was good and two fully loaded halves were scrumptious.

The bill came to R533,00 including tip.

The food was excellent, the coffee was good  and the service was friendly and efficient (except for the oat milk anomaly).   Considering the number of patrons passing through, Butter needs no recommendation but if you want a good brunch and don’t mind that the joint doesn’t have a cosy and fuzzy vibe, it’s a very good deal.
