One taco too far at Tuk Tuk Microbrewery

TUK TUK MICROBREWERY

14 Huguenot Street, Franschhoek

Supper at Tuk Tuk Microbrewery was meant to be our last blast in Franschhoek on the fourth day of our mini break but it turned out be less of a bang and more of whimper. We’d finally reached the end of our capacity to eat out, at least for now.

The day had already included morning tea at La Lude and, perhaps foolishly, early afternoon  coffee at the Wiesenhof  Lifestyle. By supper time we weren’t exactly gagging for nourishment but a visit to the Tuk Tuk was on the schedule (we try to eat here at least once on every visit to Franschhoek) and we decided to be South Afri-cans and not to let a mere peccadillo like a lack of appetite deter us.

At 19h00 the joint wasn’t overly busy, a tad surprising for such a beautiful Friday evening at the start of a long weekend but we didn’t complain as it meant a good table without having to wait at the bar, which has happened to us before.

The menu seems to have been updated since our last meal here and everything looked absolutely tempting.  Tuk Tuk is one of the best burgers ‘n beer outfits, with a side of Tex-Mex thrown in, I’ve been to and we’ve never been disappointed.

The menu now also includes Korean chicken, a Turkish dish, a Moroccan dish and three curries, all quite tempting if one is in the mood to eat foreign.

Tonight, though, we managed only one glass of Miss Molly bubbly for Von-Mari, two small draught beers for me, one bowl of nachos (R110)

and one portion of Al Pastor taco, three of ‘em on a plate, filled with pork belly and other good stuff (R165).

Really nice nosh though there was an excessive overabundance of jalapeño with the nachos. Von-Mari picked out the slices, put them aside and we almost had another (fiery) starter there. I’m all for a smidgen of piquancy but that much heat would’ve utterly overwhelmed the cheesy goodness of the nachos.

We would’ve dearly loved to share the “free form churros” (I guess it’s preferable to deconstructed churros), as they are very excellent, but that would’ve been more than “one thin wafer” too far, so we sighed, reflected on the good eats of the previous four days and returned to our guest farm and the Yorkies, who’d been snoring their hearts out.
