Knead, Sea Point

KNEAD, Sea Point
The Point Centre, Regent Road, Sea Point, Cape Town
I’ve eaten at the Kloof Street and Wembley Square Knead outlets often enough to be assured, in
general, that one can’t go far wrong with this brand because the breakfast
options are interesting, the food and service is good and the coffee is
excellent.
The restaurant is on the street level of the centre,
close to the entrance and opposite Checkers, which is an ideal position for
popping in and out quickly, before or after shopping, and the “indoors outdoors” setting within the centre,
the views of passers-by and the general
informal tone of the place makes it a welcoming venue.
I met the wife here for a late-ish breakfast, always a
rare treat, as her working hours don’t often allow for this luxury.
There is a vegan menu, with four breakfast dishes,
though the standard menu has a few vegetarian options too. The standard menu offers the old faithfuls and
a couple of new (to me), more exotic options, like the Spanish buckaroo bowl
and Mexican style breakfast I chose.
The wife chose a sourdough “meaty melt” toastie with
ham and cheese (R75)
Lately, I’ve had a yen for vegetarian, sometimes
vegan, breakfasts and the chicaquiles hit the spot today. The dish is
essentially crisp corn nachos with two fried eggs, chipotle tomato sauce,
kidneys beans, spring onions, Mozzarella and Healy\s strong mature cheddar,
buttermilk crème fraiche, lime and chilli.
This means one has a mouth-watering combination of
textures of flavours that, as the cliché has it, is Mexico on a plate and
highly satisfying too. It’s more exciting than huevos rancheros.
The toasted sandwich was excellent as well, with thick
slices of crisp toast, creamy cheese and lovely ham. A simple sandwich made
real good.
An espresso is R23 (but I paid only R20 for a second
cup) and a cappuccino is R29. The total bill came to R242 before tip.
Knead is not a trendy, pretentious place and the three
Cape Town branches I’ve been to offers some of the best innovative breakfasts
in the city. Knead is well worthwhile visiting and strong competition for that
other chain that seems to be carpet bombing Cape Town with new outlets at the
moment.
