Seeplaas: breakfast with a sea view

SEEPLAAS
Ottosrus, Groot Brakrivier
We had an overnight stay at Seeplaas guest house and the price of the room included a voucher for breakfast at Seeplaas restaurant.
The complex of buildings is set on a high dune overlooking the beach and sea and one has spectacular views from pretty much anywhere.
The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, with the latter having the best view but it was quite cold and windy this morning, so we chose an inside table as close as possible to the large windows and we could enjoy that spectacular view.
The breakfast menu is quite simple with nothing too exotic or off the beaten track but the quality of food and cooking is high.
The wife chose the mushrooms and scrambled egg on toast (which she’d had here before) and added extra bacon.
My choice was the French toast also with extra bacon.
She had black filter coffee with hot milk on the side and I drank two espressos.
Both dishes were excellent. There was exhilarating touch of truffle through the mushrooms, the pieces of back bacon were meaty and perfectly cooked and the French toast was made with rustic bread and had almost too much in the way of sauce and syrup but that’s okay. In my experience, restaurants tend to skimp on the syrup and one ends up with a dry dish. Not at Seeplaas.
We were well satisfied.
The only slight hiccup was that we were asked to pay R90 extra for the bacon (the menu offers the option of the add on) and the two espressos. I would’ve thought, if breakfast were included in a room price, that anything on the menu should be up for grabs. No-one told us upfront that we’d be required to pay extra.
Having said that, Seeplaas restaurant probably offers the best deal in the Grootbrak area, after Die Ou Pastorie, and you can not only admire the view but, if you are an art fancier, you can wander around the art gallery at the back and soak up some aesthetic food for the soul too.
