No such thing as lunch at MiCaffé

MICAFFÉ
The Barracks, 50 Bree Street, Cape Town
Popped in for what I hoped would a light lunch. Received the full menu. Ordered espresso. Asked for a bagel with salmon and cream cheese. Not available. Plan B was the sweet chilli chicken wrap. The waitress went away to consult a person she called “chef” and returned with the mood busting news that, on the entire extensive menu, only the all day breakfast items were available.
Yee and also ha!
Selected the smashed avo on toast (R72), which was surprisingly good, with a luxurious, tasty abundance of creamy avo on sourdough toast. My busted flush turned into a full house, so to speak. My only niggly complaint was that someone went ballistic on the pepper mill and the peppery heat lingered on the palate long after the avo had been ingested.
The coffee, though not badly priced at R24 for a generous espresso, wasn’t much good and even an entire sachet of sugar couldn’t rescue the unpleasant taste.
There were no other patrons when I arrived but shortly after 13h00 more people arrived, and some seemed to be regulars and/or possibly worked in the vicinity, and I wondered whether they were aficionados of the notion of an all-day breakfast.
How on earth does a restaurant or coffee shop tender a menu where three quarters of the listed items aren’t available?
