Ou Meul, once more with feeling.

OU MEUL

R45 Franschhoek

We like this Ou Meul outlet a lot because it has a large garden at the back with lots of tables under trees (and now indoor seating in the main building too),  the food and coffee are excellent and the Yorkies have room to roam. It’s a popular café-deli on the road to Franschhoek but if fortune smiles on you, it won’t be too crowded and there will always be a table.

The food is simple yet delicious, always fresh and the portions are generous.

We ate lunch here today before checking in at Vrede en Lust for the night. It was a mini-break for Lucy and Prinses who really needed to get away from snoozing in their beds all day at the house.  As you might’ve guessed, Vrede en Lust is very dog friendly.

The wife had a chicken burger with fries (R150.) I was inclined towards the exotic the Moroccan chicken and barley salad (R125) which, unintentionally, became a bit of a theme on this mini-break, as I ate a similar main course at Savoye, the upmarket restaurant at Vrede en Lust, that night.

The wife had a moment with the absolutely delicious chicken burger  and my salad was fresh and slightly spicy, with succulent grilled, butterflied chicken breast.

We shared a slice of very good carrot cake (R65) and  drank our fill of excellent coffee before we ventured forth to our abode for the night.

The bill came to R496,00 before tip.

The wife has been known to refer to this Ou Meul as “our happy place” and, though it’s not our only happy place (we have many), it’s certainly up there with the happiest of places. The garden setting is exemplary (it’s almost like a farmyard), the service is always cheerful and efficient and the vittles are very satisfactory indeed.

Have I mentioned that the Yorkies have a lot of fun here?  Prinses for some reason always wants to dive head first into the low dam around the back and Lucy interrogates all smells granularly just in case someone has dropped a morsel of chewable goodness on the ground.

A delight for both humans and furballs.
