Local lunch at Our Local

OUR LOCAL
117 Kloof Street, Cape Town
Somehow, on our way to brunch at Sonny and Irene in Sea Point, we were thrown off course by cosmic interference and found ourselves seated at the central communal table in this vast warehouse, ordering lunch because breakfast is served only until 12h00.
Such are the vicissitudes of life in Cape Town.
As I’ve mentioned before, the current look and get up of Our Local no longer looks and feels like a dusty, decrepit, second-hand emporium coincidentally also serving food. With many more tables and lots of greenery, it provides a very pleasant environment for some good nosh, good coffee and most entertaining people watching.
It's become a huge success story.
I don’t feel out of place amongst the Millennial and post-Millennial demographic but it’s very true that Kloof Street in general, and Our Local today, is pretty much the sole province of your younger, hipper and trés cooler generation.
The wife ordered the smashed avo and hummus on toasted sourdough (R110) with a poached egg (R15)
and I was enchanted by the promise of the “golden salad” (R110) of turmeric quinoa, butternut, yellow bell pepper, baby corn and almond flakes.
Both dishes were generous and supremely tasty. According to the wife, it was the best avo, hummus and sourdough toast she’d ever had. After I was done with my meal, she had to make copious use of wet wipes to clear my lips and beard of yellow turmeric stains.
She finished with a cinnabun (cinnamon roll) (R70) which was okay but too dry for her taste; a glazed Cinnabon, it’s not. My choice was the orange and almond cake (R70), which was properly moist, orangey and incrementally a bit too sweet for me but a very good cake, nonetheless.
The bill, including coffee, came to R451,00 before tip.
The serviced is friendly and efficient, the coffee is good and the ambience is hugely fun. There is a lot of seating but the place is very popular on a weekend and one might have to wait a bit for a table or seat at the communal table if you arrive at peak hours. Oh, and the heat generated by a cast iron, woodburning stove is a big bonus on a chilly day.
